Emergency Lights: Why are they important?

Whether you enter an office, a store, a movie theater, a restaurant or any commercial space, you must have noticed the very visible and obvious emergency lighting systems around the exits of this building. But do you know its true importance?

Currently, it is absolutely essential, and often mandatory, that spaces are prepared in the event of a power failure. Just as your car's seat belts and airbags must function properly in the event of an accident, so must your emergency lighting during a fire, power failure, or other disaster.

What is an Emergency Light?

An emergency light is a direct current lighting device with a battery that automatically turns on when the primary power supply fails in a building or space. It is usually placed on the emergency exit to provide a guide to a clear path during an evacuation.

How does an emergency light work?

When in case of an emergency such as a fire or earthquake, a power outage occurs, the emergency lighting will immediately activate its battery to provide an emergency light for up to 3 hours. This period of time is considered sufficient to ensure the safety of all persons inside the building. Once normal power is restored, the hazard lights will recharge until they are ready to be used again.

They are usually placed above exit signs, near fire safety equipment, near exit doors or escape routes, and on stairs.

Why is Emergency Lighting so important?

Emergency lights are essential to provide effective safety in the event of a power failure, usually caused by emergency situations. If we do not have adequate vision during emergencies, we could be seriously injured and block the evacuation area. It is for this reason that emergency lighting is so important, as it illuminates the escape path, making it easier, and avoiding obstacles and possible injuries.
